Family Fire Plan

Jon R. - Grand Island

When my wife and I bought our first home, we taught our three kids (5, 3, and 1 yrs old) how to evacuate in a fire.  Then we tested them over and over, using our smoke alarm test button, until they got it right.  It took some time, but they got it.

Then, we taught them how to get out through their window.  When they didn't come out, we realized that they could not reach the upper latch to their tall windows.  My wife and I realized that we had to modify how we locked these windows to make sure the little kids could always reach the locks.

If we hadn't practiced our plan, we would have never have discovered this obstacle.  Always, always practice your emergency plans.
