School

Children constitute the largest segment of our vulnerable population, and schools throughout Nebraska are planning for the safety and security of their students. Below are several discussion points for school administrators and parents to contribute to safety in our Nebraska schools.

School Administrators can ask questions

  • How do we know who is in our school buildings?
  • How do we take shelter in severe weather?
  • How do we evacuate in an orderly way?
  • How do we account for students in an emergency?
  • How do we identify, respond, and report issues of illness and disease?
  • What can my local law enforcement provide? What do they expect from me?
  • When did we last practice aspects of our school emergency plan?
  • What can the State Department of Education provide for me?

Parents

  • Ask how your school will communicate with families during a crisis.
  • Ask if your school stores adequate food, water and other basic supplies.
  • Find out if your school is prepared to "shelter-in-place" if need be, and where they plan to go if they must get away.
  • Ask if your school requires that visitors check in with the office.
